Search/Viewing Tips
This site includes a simple browse tool and an advanced text search to help you find the images of interest to you.
Browse Collection
Click "Browse Collection" on the menu bar. This section allows you to perform a general search of the collection. This tool constitutes a broader search of the collection than the advanced search where you are able to enter more specific information. Select the collection from the drop-down menus.
Search Categories
- Period: The collection is broken down into four time periods: suffrage, equal rights, international, and contemporary. If you run your mouse over a particular period, you will be provided with a sentence on the years covered and the significance of the period.
- Media Type: The collection is broken down according to the type of item you are looking for in the collection: photographs, political cartoons, textiles, scrapbooks, records, publications, furnishings, paintings prints and drawings, sculpture, artifacts, and miscellaneous.
- Media Subtype: This final division is specific to the media type you choose. This will allow you to narrow the search even further to prevent results with hundreds of images you do not need.
- Photographs are broken down by individuals, events, or organizations.
- Political Cartoons are broken down between Nina Allender and Miscellaneous Artists.
- The textiles are broken down by banner, sash, and costume.

Advanced Search
Click "Advanced Search" on the Menu bar to set search limits using the broader categories in the browse section as well as keyword, title, author, subject, material type, or date range.
Note: Since the site has not yet been indexed, subject and keyword terms are not available; performing these types of searches at this time may yield fewer results than using the more general "Browse Collection" search. If you search in this category, enter your keywords into the "Title" field.
Helpful Hints to Limit Your Search Results
- Omit initial articles such as a, the, le and la. For example: If you are searching for "the thinking woman" sculpture, enter only "thinking woman."
- When searching keywords, use Boolean operators to search for combinations of words or phrases. Enter Boolean operators (i.e., AND, OR, NOT) in either uppercase or lowercase.
For example:
"AND picket and arrest"retrieves only records containing both terms
"OR Catherine Flannagan or Catherine Flanagan" retrieves only records containing either one or more terms
"NOT suffrage not suffragist" excludes records containing the second term - Enclose words with " " (quotes) if you want them to appear next to each other and in that order (as a two-word phrase).
- When searching by date, use the Year Range search windows (at the bottom of the search form) to limit a search by date of publication. Type the years in the From and Through windows, then click on the Search button.
Example: If you want to limit your results to the Equal Rights publications from 1923 until 1930, you would type 01 (Month) 1923 (Year) in the "From" window, and 01 (Month) 1930 (Year) in the "To" window. Or, if you waned to limit your results to items published in 1923 only, you would type 01 (Month) 1923 (Year) in the From window (and nothing in the Through window).
Note: in some bibliographic records, the exact month and date was not available for a particular item. In this case, we entered a default date of January 1 with the year.
Example: if a Nina Allender wrote 1919 on her cartoon but provided no other information, the date is listed as 01-01-1919 in the bibliographic record.
